Worshiping the Creation and Not the Creator

Romans 1:25 They traded the truth about God for a lie. So, they worshiped and served the things God created instead of the Creator himself, who is worthy of eternal praise! Amen.

Only in modern times has it come to be taken for granted that politics is entirely secular. The inevitable result is the demoralization of politics. Politics loses its moral structure and purpose and turns into an affair of group interest and personal ambition. Government comes to the aid of only the well organized and influential, and it is limited only where it is checked by countervailing forces. Politics ceases to be understood as a pre-eminently human activity and is left to those who find it profitable, pleasurable, or in some other way useful to themselves. Political action thus comes to be carried out purely for the sake of power and privilege. ~Glenn Tinder, The Atlantic

After reading Glenn’s paragraph, I have a tendency to agree with his premise that politics is the seat of power and privilege. I was asked recently about my worldview and why I have a propensity not to trust anything that comes from this world.

It is quite simple: I have lived long enough to test the things of this world; everything from politics, to sports, to philosophy, even theology, and I have found all of it comes up wanting.

I watch people at the various ‘award’ shows for music and movies trying so hard to feel important and honored. Other people in the news go ballistic about politics … all trying to be powerful and influential. They are all worshipping the creation and not the Creator. It stands to reason why so much of entertainment and politics makes up so much of our interest as a society; it is because we have abandoned God in the land:

Judges 2:10 And all that generation also were gathered to their fathers. And there arose another generation after them who did not know the Lord or the work that he had done for Israel.

Judges 21:25 In those days Israel had no king; all the people did whatever seemed right in their own eyes.

If you think God will never depart from a people, you’re wrong. It happened to Israel because of their practices:

Ezekiel 5:11 Therefore, as I live, declares the Lord God, surely, because you have defiled my sanctuary with all your detestable things and with all your abominations, therefore I will withdraw.

The world’s standards for what is important are usually formed about the abilities of the creation, and not the Creator. The entertainment, the politics, or the worldview ideas are never formed around a Designer God, but around the abilities of the creation.

I think of the Oscars. All of the actors and actresses should be thanking God for the talents and opportunities He gave them in order to stand in front of people to accept an award for their craft. How many do? God is not in their language, and He is certainly not in their acceptance speech for praise and honor. Yet, Who gives them the very breath they breathe? Who keeps their heart from stopping? We should have an awards program that Honors God. Let’s give Him the Oscar, or let’s rename it ‘the Moses’ award for a performance well done.

Is taking Honor away from God an Evil act of misplaced worship? If the goal of our Enemy, the Devil, is to keep us from Honoring God by using everything influential in this world to ignore God and honor ourselves, wouldn’t you say that is a misplaced emphasis that is motivated by an Evil intent?

Worshiping the creation is a futile practice. Without the input of God, everything will be incomplete; it will border on speculation, and our imagination will rule our understanding. Science is often based upon speculation. When science says the earth and inhabitants are billions of years old, it seems a bit imaginary. There is no scientific proof the earth is that old, but we accept it because science is an acceptable means of telling us about our origins. Science has the same problem that Faith does … demonstrating the proof. There are no records dating back that far, so it is impossible to prove.

My point in all of this is simple. If humans want to be free from any accountability to give Honor to the God of the Bible, then God lets us go and withdraws (Romans 1). God’s Accountability will center on two major themes:

1. Immorality

2. Unbelief

It is these two themes that the Books of God’s ultimate Judgment will be based.

What did you do with your life? First Book.

What did you do with Jesus Christ, the Only Way of Salvation given to mankind that they could be saved?

Check it out to see if I am right. And if right, then it will be a frightening experience to face God without Jesus Christ in your life.

Revelation 20 12And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. 13And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. 14Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
