When Your Message Opposes Culture

The church goes along with everything and stands against nothing – until she is convinced that it is the safe and popular thing to do; then she passes her courageous resolutions and issues her world-shaking manifestos - all in accord with the world's newest venture - whatever it may be. ~A.W. Tozer

It was thirty years ago that I first read the story of Lot where the men of the city came to his house to take by force the men (angels) who were visiting:

Genesis 19 4Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom - both young and old - surrounded the house. 5They called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.”

It shocked me at the time because of the aggressive nature of their request. Yet it is this aggressive nature of sin that grabbed the headlines recently from the UK:

“Third UK stadium bars Franklin Graham from preaching to appease LGBT activists”

I have read in recent years Bible commentators saying the gay community will be the nemesis of religious freedom. As I’ve noted in previous blogs, several political hopefuls proposed that the tax-exempt status of organizations would be in jeopardy if they weren’t inclusive of accepting gay pastors and performing gay marriages.

So, municipalities are telling Franklin Graham that they will not rent the stadiums because of his opposition to the LGBTQ message. Here is a summary from Christianity Today:

“This week, something of great significance has happened in the UK. Something that has implications far beyond its shores and that will affect the Church and Western democracy for years to come. Future historians will look back and see this incident as an indication of the decline of Western democracy and it's replacement with an authoritarian ideology far removed from the liberal democracy birthed from Christianity.”

The article went on to say that it is the clergy who side with the LGBTQ community that is most troubling.

Again, this is nothing new. The Bishop of Sheffield, Pete Wilcox, said in November: "Mr. Graham's rhetoric is repeatedly and unnecessarily inflammatory and, in my opinion, represents a risk to the social cohesion of our city."

The Rev. Bryan Kerr, a Church of Scotland minister in Lanark, said Graham's views "do not sit comfortably with many Christians in Scotland". He said: "These views, and many more like them, are not shared by all Christians as Mr. Graham would have people believe. Franklin Graham isn't the voice of Christianity."

He is right, Franklin Graham isn’t the voice of Christianity … the Bible is. These comments from some of the clergy in the UK is an example of what I call, ‘The Cultural Jesus’ where we place as much emphasis on what the culture teaches us as we do with what the Bible teaches. So, the culture and the Bible get married in the message.

It’s one thing to have an opinion on the issues of the day, but it’s another to prevent your opponent to have his. True Biblical Christianity has always opposed the message of the gay community because its message is a celebration of sinful behavior. God isn’t against people … He is against their sinful behavior. You can’t say that one kind of sinful sexual behavior like homosexuality is okay, while other forms of sexual behavior like adultery, rape, incest, or pedophilia are not. If society accepts gay love as a normal form of human behavior, why shouldn’t all sexual behavior be okay too? People say, “well homosexual love is a committed love therefore it should be acceptable because its lifelong relationship.” Polygamy can also be a lifelong relationship, and, in fact, even adultery can be a practice that is committed with multiple people who are not your spouse.

Clergy that cozy up to sinful practices are false spiritual leaders. David Wilkerson warned in many of his writings that the Last Days would produce a False Church. This False Church would accept issues that the Bible teaches are wrong. You cannot be a Christian and refuse to obey God’s Word. The Bible warns that in the Last Days everyone will be faced with messages filled with deception and delusion in the highest form and homosexuality is at the top of this list.

The False Church tells us to accept people as they are and be okay with whatever they do. Today, no one wants to be on the side of any issue that culture does not support. That is another reason so many will fall away in the Last Days. They do not want to be known as people who oppose, but as people who accept. God accepts everyone but it is on His Terms. For example, God’s Terms are:

· God accepts all people because He Loves all people.

· God condemns sin, the behavior of people, separating Him from humans.

· God removes sin which He condemns, by giving Himself for it (Jesus on The Cross).

· God now presents His Message of Salvation and acceptance through the Message of the Gospel (The Cross).

This is the Message that the UK Churches and municipalities are rejecting. They want their behavior to be accepted without any conviction by God.

History will remember how this era in time will be known for the tolerant behavior to all people groups and ideas, all except one … Biblical Christianity!

I guess that makes sense, Bible believing people have always had to swim upstream only to face persecution for their Beliefs. And here you thought all you had to do is go to Church, sit in your pew, read your Bible, and be content.
