I suspect that if you were to ask most Americans if global warming is real, they would agree to some degree. We have been inundated with reports, documentaries, and some scientists who are convinced we will destroy our planet if we don’t stop our carbon footprint. It’s hard to say how much of our planet is being destroyed by our industries and our automobiles. Who knows if the cycle of the earth is just moving through a phase as it has done from century to century?
The one thing you won’t hear about global warming is the fact that God said the earth is under a curse:
Isaiah 24 3The earth will be completely emptied and looted. The Lord has spoken! 4The earth mourns and dries up, and the land wastes away and withers. Even the greatest people on earth waste away. 5The earth suffers for the sins of its people, for they have twisted God’s instructions, violated his laws, and broken his everlasting covenant. 6Therefore, a curse consumes the earth. Its people must pay the price for their sin.
Let me outline that for you … the land will be completely emptied and looted, it will mourn and dry up, and waste away and wither. Why it does this is because the earth suffers for the sins of its people, not because they are primarily polluters but because they have twisted God’s instructions, violated His laws, and broken His everlasting covenant. So, because of their disregard for God’s laws, the earth is under a curse and the people will pay the price for their sin. It is important to see why the earth is cursed and why we suffer … not because of pollution, but because of our sin. So, ultimately, the cause of any global conditions is because the earth is cursed because of our sin against God.
Romans 8:20 Against its will, all creation was subjected to God’s curse.
Because of the fall of man, every part of God’s creation was subjected to a curse. Under that curse, all creation groans: the ground was cursed for Adam’s sake, thorns and thistles and noxious weeds began to grow, all of Eve’s daughters have labored painfully in childbirth, and death entered the world. ~Bible Commentator
All of God’s creation groans because of the sin of Adam, and that included the land. Some people forget that the earth and all of its inhabitants belong to the Lord:
Psalm 24:1 The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it. The world and all its people belong to him.
God is in charge of the earth. He is our landlord, we are the tenants. Even when our sin has cursed the earth, that doesn’t change His ownership or oversight of this world. He is still in control.
Israel has reversed the curse that Isaiah says is upon the earth in discovering ways where the land is blessed. Today, Israel is a land of fertile farmland and reclaimed desert. The farms are models of combining productive farming techniques and technology that leads the world through innovations in agriculture. God is behind their success, and God could be the success that overcomes the curse that is upon the earth. Countries fail, crops fail, economies fail, and people fail … all because we have ignored the Lord. America is failing morally and economically because her idols are everywhere in the land. Americans have defiled their land due in part to the acceptance of evil that is so pervasive everywhere. As Jesus said, you cannot serve God and mammon … one will overpower the other. Mammon (wealth regarded as an evil influence or false object of worship and devotion) has become the American god.
I find it interesting that the top fossil fuel polluters like China, America, India, Pakistan, and Russia have all defiled the land for the sake of progress and wealth. That god of mammon drives the economic engines that keep defiling the land. These top polluting nations do not have a God-consciousness. Even Americans who think they are religiously tolerant will show disdain for a Christianity that is bold and politically active.
So, the bottom line for me is the words of Isaiah, “the earth is cursed, because of the sin of the people.” Our arrogance builds independence from God and it is our greatest liability. Until we find our way back to the God of the Bible, nothing will ever change the curse we find in the land.
