Blame is usually what happens when crisis happens. The only One Who gets off the hook is God because ‘Acts of God’ are just indefensible. But usually we like to blame someone, like in our current injustice narrative between the races. Most people blame the police … it’s their problem. In the Church people are asking, “Why haven’t we been better prepared for this season of cultural upheaval?”
Good question. It’s hard not to blame the leadership of our Churches for not foreseeing the tensions that exist in Our Day. I know when I have attended Church or watched online, most of the emphasis has been on improving my life through a Practice or a Belief that I needed to incorporate into my understanding. Yet rarely do we push the envelope beyond the attitude of many Church-going people who say, “Make me feel better preacher.” They say, “Tell me again how God Loves me and how He Pursues me because I am so important to Him.”
I am not dismissing the idea that God doesn’t Love you nor has He stopped Pursuing people … that is in His Nature and He continues to do this today. Yet, in the midst of wanting more of this kind of therapy, Christians have traded facing the Honesty of Scripture for a Message that feels good.
Ezekiel 33 1The word of the Lord came to me: 2“Son of man, speak to your people and say to them: ‘When I bring the sword against a land, and the people of the land choose one of their men and make him their watchman, 3and he sees the sword coming against the land and blows the trumpet to warn the people, 4then if anyone hears the trumpet but does not heed the warning and the sword comes and takes their life, their blood will be on their own head.’”
I want you to notice the words, ‘When I bring the sword against a land’. Who is the ‘I’ there? God speaks to the Prophets prior to doing anything.
Amos 3:7 Indeed, the Sovereign LORD never does anything until he reveals his plans to his servants the prophets.
So, the Watchman is not reading The New York Times or The Washington Post and then sounding an alarm about a liberal takeover. The Watchman is reading God’s Word, Praying, and Seeking God for Discernment. The Watchman today is the Church. It is leaders who have been set apart in the Church to speak out and Warn the people of what God is bringing upon the Land. God is in Control and He never abdicates that Control. If God is in Control and never out of Control, then all that happens is happening for a reason.
As I have said in recent weeks, God tests us, and He allows the conditions around us to test our Character. His goal is for us to see if the Character of Christ that we claim to know and claim has changed us, is really is a reality. I know when tests have come in the past, I have failed them miserably. I was with a good buddy the other day (a fellow minister) and he used an expletive to describe a person and I challenged him on the use of the word. I wasn’t trying to be ‘holier than thou’, but it wasn’t a word that Jesus would use in His vocabulary.
Proverbs 18:17 Any story sounds true until someone tells the other side and sets the record straight.
This is why, as a Country, the wise thing to do is not to believe the first rendition of any narrative we are hearing until we check out the other side. This is why the media today is so wrong. They present one side … only the side that fits their worldview. In the past, journalists would present both sides of any story because Truth may not be in the first story we hear. This is why some have decried that journalism today is dead. The news media set out early on to be the Truth tellers, to keep the public aware on what is happening around the world and in our own Government. Today, it is simply propaganda and a means to influence … not to inform.
When you face a crisis like our Country is facing today, we will never find the Truth in just one source. I watched a special on CBS where Gayle King was presenting an hour long look at justice in America. It was a one-sided presentation that only told half of the story. It is true that African Americans have suffered at the hands of bigotry and discrimination, yet there was no mention of the tens of thousands of black lives that have been saved by policeman. There was no mention of the African American leaders who would disagree with making George Floyd’s death a symbol of protest. Many of their voices aren’t being heard. Why? Because racism can be used to fundamentally change America. Defund the police is the immediate cry of those who want change.
Here are a few quotes from Prager U and the African Americans who would disagree with Gayle King’s narrative:
No one -- not a single solitary person defended or excused the death of George Floyd, so why is this rioting happening? Because that is what the media wanted. ~Candace Owens
One of the big FakeNews narratives is that ‘institutional,’ ‘structural’ and ‘systemic’ racism remain a major problem in America, when, in fact, race has never been a more insignificant barrier to success in America. ~Larry Elder
There is nothing white liberals fear more than a God fearing, educated, black man. No my friends … there is no systemic racism in America … just Systemic “Marxist Elitism” … an EVIL that uses, abuses and discards anyone for POWER. ~Burgess Owens
Don’t let the Media fool you! The majority of Americans support the police. Do not support the destroying of their city. ~Brandon Tatum
Black activists and white progressives stress racism because it serves their own interests, not because it actually improves the station of blacks. ~Jason Riley
As Christians, our Allegiance is to Christ, His Goals, and His Mission for the Church. Any crisis our culture faces has a sin base to it, and because that is True, our need as the Church must be ready for a response. That response will be predicated upon how we have been Discipled as Believers. I don’t think we can use the phrase, “This is your best life now,” or “God wants you to be prosperous,” or “God has a destiny for you.” These catch phrases may sell books to people who want to be happy, successful, and motivated but they are not Biblical ideas found in the Bible. If we are opening up about systems of dishonesty or corruption, we might start by asking questions about the Biblical Foundation of some of our Churches, like doctrines, ministry emphasis, Biblical models of accountability, and leadership silence on Moral themes that affect the conscience.
I hope this time of national reflection will go beyond city hall and get into all areas of our lives.
Keeping Life Honest and Truthful … Larry Kutzler
