When God Calls Us to Stand Against Evil

Updated: Feb 24

No other Book of the Bible is more focused on Standing Against Evil as the Book of Jonah. God calls this man Jonah to go to the worst people group on earth at the time and preach against their immorality. The opening few Verses of the Book of Jonah tell it all:

Jonah 1 1Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, 2Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it, for their evil has come up before me.

This was the only reason Jonah was called by God to go to this evil, immoral city of Nineveh and speak against their immorality, and warn them of the Judgment of God.

When people ask me about this blog, I usually will say, “it is not a blog for the faint of heart.” Why, do you ask? Well, we are told by Scripture to preach the ‘Whole Counsel of God‘ which means we don’t cherry pick what we like and leave the rest.

Acts 20:27 For I didn’t shrink from declaring all that God wants you to know.

The reason I write this blog is because we are not hearing the ‘Whole Counsel of God.’ In some ways, we, the Church, have failed to go to our Nineveh that God has Called us to and preach against the immorality of Our Day. Of course, this is not the Message most Churches convey to the public and for the same reason Jonah ran from God, we are running too. Jonah knew that Nineveh was a great city and he wanted nothing to do with the task of being God’s Spokesman to bring a Message of Repentance to this ungodly people group.

Ultimately, any Message about the cost of immorality will hopefully lead people to the Grace and Mercy of God, which was the end result of Jonah’s Obedience when he finally fulfilled what God wanted him to do.

When we think about the cost of immorality, it doesn’t register in today’s world that there is a cost. We, as a society, have been fixated on the right to do and be whatever we desire. It’s called ‘the freedom to become’ and it is my right to live out my life in accordance with that freedom. Freedom to love and marry the same sex, freedom to abort life, freedom to live in sexual freedom without restraint, and freedom to push ideas that are contrary to the Teachings of the Biblical God. Evil has twisted the meaning of freedom to mean, ‘get what you want, do as you please, and be free to express yourself.’

God’s idea of Freedom is to be Free from the Bondages of Sin and Free from the Bondages of Evil.

Let’s face it. We all run from things we don’t want to do. Most of us run from Evangelism because it makes people feel uncomfortable. Yet it is Evangelism that makes God’s ideas known to a world that is almost devoid of Godly Truth. Again, Evangelism is under attack today by our younger counterparts as Barna research discovered:

“Millennials feel especially conflicted about evangelism—and, in fact, almost half believe it is wrong to share their faith.”

The Call of God has not changed since the day God called Jonah to the Mission of reaching people for Christ. Culture tries to intimidate us into thinking that Evangelism is invasive and should not be practiced because it makes people feel uncomfortable. I thank God for the Story of Jonah and how that Story helps us to see God’s Heart for the unsaved. Jonah’s job was not easy, but his Obedience paid off in saving thousands of lives.

God always Calls us to tell His Story, and it is our silence that makes us run from our Nineveh.
