I find it fascinating that the media has found a new enemy to report on rather than Donald Trump. The Coronavirus is our new enemy in the news, replacing the droning sound of news people telling us every 24 hours on how bad our President is at everything he does. Now they are droning on and on about how bad this virus is and that we better self-quarantine to survive.
It’s actually refreshing to see a real enemy being talked about for a change. However, I wondered recently how a Prophet of God would address our age. I think I found a good example of what that prophet would say from Hosea Chapter 4. I believe this is as accurate as you can get on describing the results of rejecting God (something Israel did) and we are doing today:
Hear the word of the Lord, you Israelites,
because the Lord has a charge to bring
against you who live in the land:
There is no faithfulness, no love,
no acknowledgment of God in the land.
There is only cursing lying and murder,
stealing and adultery;
they break all bounds,
and bloodshed follows bloodshed.
When hard times come to a Nation, to a family, to an individual, one must ask some hard questions illustrated by the Prophet Hosea in this Chapter.
Is there Faithfulness to the Lord? Is there love among the people? Is there acknowledgment of God in the Land? America has always been a land of opportunity for people since its inception, and in the beginning, there was an anointing on this Land because those who came to settle America had a Faith in God. They set up a Moral Government with the idea that all people mattered and set a course for the future with a document that could stand the test of time called the Constitution. Today our Land is in great peril because we have abandoned God and have instituted our own gods that rule modern life. There are people today in our Government who want to rewrite the Constitution. Without the guiding Principles of Morality, we end up with the kind of result the Prophet predicted:
· No Boundaries
I don’t think there is any debate about this … we are living in a Country that exemplifies these characteristics. These are the characteristics of a Nation whose god is themselves.
Because of this the land dries up,
and all who live in it waste away;
the beasts of the field, the birds in the sky
and the fish in the sea are swept away.
But let no one bring a charge,
let no one accuse another,
for your people are like those
who bring charges against a priest.
You stumble day and night,
and the prophets stumble with you.
So I will destroy your mother—
my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge.
Because you have rejected knowledge,
I also reject you as my priests;
because you have ignored the law of your God,
I also will ignore your children.
The cause of Evil living is wrong thinking. The problem with wrong thinking is that it starts with the wrong beliefs. Even the land and the animals are affected by our indifference to God. But as the Prophet says, the people of God are destroyed because of their lack of knowledge about God.
As you can see by the Prophet’s last comment, there are grave ramifications for future generations due to our lack of knowledge about God. Without an emphasis on God, families will drift away from God and toward a secular approach to living.
One of the last thoughts that the Prophet shares is the giving of ourselves to the Spirit of Harlotry:
They ask a piece of wood for advice!
They think a stick can tell them the future!
Longing after idols
has made them foolish.
They have played the prostitute,
serving other gods and deserting their God.
This Spirit of Harlotry is everywhere today, and it basically implies that we have abandoned God for things that we have made gods in our lives. We have broken the First and Second Commandments as a Nation by replacing God with lessor gods of this world. We have made idols out of people, wealth, and power, always prostituting ourselves to maintain or obtain a lifestyle of fulfilling a dream.
The reason I wanted to unpack this Prophet’s Message is because Prophets bring course correction. They tell us exactly, according to God, where we have wandered off the Narrow Path. If this Prophet were a pastor today, he probably would not be a popular leader. Why you ask? It is simple. People do not want to know the Truth, because Truth brings conviction and conviction expects a change. Human nature doesn’t want to change anything that will disrupt our comfort, recognition, and prosperity.
The Prophet was honest when he said, “there is no knowledge of God in the land.” That statement alone is worth the time it has taken you to read thus far.
This statement has the insight for you to Discern our Day. I hope you will take that Verse and allow what this Prophet said and be challenged to make God Known in and through your life today. Let none of us who take the name Christian be guilty of hiding the Truth or not sharing the Good News of the Gospel.
