The Panic, the Pandemic, and the Peace

The pandemic is here to stay.

We had a short respite from the COVID-19 panic this summer, but it appears it will all be ramping up again for the fall. Recently, reports came out that we will all be masking up again as the virus mutates and spreads across parts of the United States and the world. I have always thought that the pandemic will never end because there will always be strains of it, and like the normal flu season, it will spread in a mutated form from season to season. Our world has become a world of vaccines, masks, and social distancing, and it doesn’t appear that we will catch a break in these pandemics.

Recently, my wife and I visited a Mexican restaurant in a western suburb in the Twin Cities. As we walked around the upscale shopping area we were surprised that 80% of the stores were gone. Store after store sat empty due to the economic shutdown. What happened to all those employees, the inventory, the customers? All have disappeared. We wondered about those who owned all the property these stores leased from and what happened to them? I suppose if they were a large investment group, they could weather all the closings, but more than likely they did not. That shopping area is a ghost town, and the only thing open for blocks was a few restaurants that survived. Believe me, it was an eye-opening experience.

So, what happens in the next round of the pandemic? Do we close down again? Will we see civil disobedience against our elected officials who mandated our first shutdown? What is the right thing to do?

Safety should always be our priority, but hopefully, it won't turn into the mind-numbing panic that we experienced the first time around. To me, pandemics are signs of the times and a definite sign of the era in which we live. This era is what the Bible calls the last days. Why the last days? Because there is an event coming that no man can stop or deny. It is the return of Jesus Christ to earth in keeping with His promise to come again:

John 14 2There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? 3When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am.

One-third of the Bible is about God’s plans for the future of Israel and the future of the world. God doesn’t give us all the specifics we would like to know, but He gives us what we need to know … including the greatest truth that He is in control. People love to speculate when it comes to Biblical prophecy. They insert their own ideas or try to manipulate a Verse or two to say something it does not say. The truth is that God is in control and His timing will be perfect when Jesus Christ does return. However, Jesus tells us what the world will look like in this era of the last days. One of those changes in the world will be pestilences and plagues, or in modern language, pandemics.

Luke 21:11 There will be violent earthquakes, and famines and plagues in various places, and there will be terrifying sights and great signs from heaven.

The last days will be days when people will fear what they see and what they hear. The pandemics will be real, and the devastating effects of them will be overpowering for most. We are currently experiencing a drought in most of America and it will affect our food supply come the fall. No water, no crops … it’s that simple. Famines have been averted for the most part in the last decade or two because of the supply of food that we harvest. But like the pandemic, if we continue for several years without adequate moisture for our farmers to grow food, we will be in another crisis of worldwide hunger. If American crop growers do not produce the crops necessary to ship to the world, there will be worldwide famine. This will create panic, fear, and hopelessness in many people. We see the aftermath of what COVID-19 has done to the psychological patterns of people … they are weary, frightened, and overly cautious on how they live out their daily routines. Where is the good news in all of this? It’s simple … God says return to Me, the author of life, and the Savior of the world. It’s strictly my opinion, but I think God knew people would be stubborn like they were in Noah’s day … they ignore God and live life as if there was no tomorrow:

Matthew 24 37When the Son of Man returns, it will be like it was in Noah’s day. 38In those days before the flood, the people were enjoying banquets and parties and weddings right up to the time Noah entered his boat. 39People didn’t realize what was going to happen until the flood came and swept them all away. That is the way it will be when the Son of Man comes.

But guess what? There is a tomorrow, and that day belongs to God. The way we escape tomorrow is to be right with God today. Jesus told us there is no other name under heaven where a person can be saved. Other than the name of Jesus there is no hope, no escape, and no eternal future with God. Period. You can argue all you want with my assessment, but the pandemics are signs that this current era is the birth pain before delivery. The delivery of the world will be the King of Kings. The Lord of Lords is returning, and as the flood in Noah's day, people are not ready for what will happen.

Are you ready? Are you willing to forego the panic, the fear, and the ramifications of a pandemic to know God? Now is the time to reconsider the direction of your life and the promises God gives to you that will change everything and grant you peace. What do you have to lose?

Make Jesus your Lord and Savior today … pray the prayer millions pray every day:

“Lord forgive me of my sins, and Jesus become my Lord and Savior in my life. Help me to live according to your word and by the leading of the Holy Spirit now in my life because of my faith in Jesus.”

It's a simple prayer, but a prayer that will save your life and grant you the peace you will need to survive in the days to come.
