My wife and I sat and watched a Church service online this morning because many Churches have gone to virtual services during this virus season. It was different to watch a Message without people in the audience, but I wonder if this is the new normal? After 9/11 there came a new normal, and we entered the age of heightened security and all became aware that we no longer live in a bubble. Evil is everywhere, and even though we don’t want to dwell on it, we certainly have been made aware of our vulnerability.
With the deadly viruses now becoming the new normal for the world, how will it impact the way we live our lives? Hand sanitizers, face masks, over stocking on toilet paper, shelter in place, social distancing … is this the new normal? The overstocking of toilet paper is a great symbol of what we think is important to preserve. Forget the pantry, just make sure we have the toilet paper! These viruses that the world has been experiencing are no joke … they are deadly, they are unseen, and they spread quickly throughout a population.
Throughout the Christian community we are spreading a no fear Message, and to some degree it is helpful. We need to understand that God is still in control, and even though people are dying, and it is a threat to every human being on the planet, God is still in control. A virus will not destroy the world; however, it is a Sign of many Signs that God is preparing us for His Return.
Amos 3:7 Indeed, the Sovereign LORD never does anything until he reveals his plans to his servants the prophets.
God has been sending us Signs as the Scriptures declares would happen in the Last Days. Earthquakes, famines, and pestilences all are ways God has been speaking to us. We have been inundated over the past number of years with global warming and the world thinks it is greenhouse gases and other emissions of pollutants that are causing this dilemma. However, I believe it is God’s Way of getting our attention, not because of pollution, but of His Return. There will be Signs in the Heavens and on earth about God’s Message to us about His Plans. God Works with individuals we call Prophets, and He Works with a corporate Body of Believers we call the Church. Regardless of how He Speaks, He is still Speaking.
If either one of those entities stops listening to Him, He will find ways to Speak through nature, through disaster, or through Revelation of some kind. God will Speak because that is His Nature … He is not a silent God by nature. His Creation of Nature is an expression of Him, so He is even Speaking to us through Nature. There are times that God is silent, but that is usually because we have failed to listen to Him.
One of the things that is important to realize in this new normal is that God never changes. He is Good. He is always Good, no matter the circumstances on earth, He is still Good. It’s Evil we don’t understand, and often we ignore it. Yet, Evil is like a virus in the sense that it is difficult to detect, difficult to cure, and difficult in keeping it contained. We would do ourselves a favor if we spent more time understanding how Evil works, how to detect it, and how prevent it from infiltrating our homes and lives.
In the last twenty years we have failed each other in keeping discernment in our circles of teaching and influence. Many leaders have stopped preaching on Prophecy because it was too controversial for the congregations, and many Christians felt like it was too scary.
And now we have a global virus pandemic and we wonder what’s happening. What’s happening is the beginning of the birth pains that the Apostle Matthew tells us about:
Matthew 24 7Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8All these are the beginning of birth pains. 9Then they will deliver you over to be persecuted and killed, and you will be hated by all nations because of My name.
So, the pestilence plagues are brought up in Luke 21, and these are the beginning of the labor that will culminate in the Return of Jesus Christ. That’s why these Signs were given as a reminder that our sin and our rebellion against God brings about the ramifications of human peril and distress:
1 Samuel 15:23 Rebellion is as sinful as witchcraft, and stubbornness as bad as worshiping idols. So, because you have rejected the command of the LORD, he has rejected you as king.
This was spoken to Saul the King of Israel, but it applies to everyone. Our world has rebelled against God, and our stubborn independent behavior has brought us to a point where God is communicating to us to come back to Him. The rebellion and the stubbornness have not gone well with us, it has only brought more pain into our world. Remember that witchcraft is a form of Evil worship (witchcraft) and God tells us that our condition is not hopeless if we Repent of it and Return to Jesus.
The new normal for the world is chaos and the new normal for the Church is a strong word to put on the Armor of God and engage that chaos in Truth and Love.
Signs are always given to remind us that God is trying to get our attention, waiting for us to open our eyes and ears to Him. If you are quarantined because of the virus, it would be a great time to reflect on how much He Loves you, and as any good earthy father would do, He will Protect His Children.
