Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Proverbs 29:17 Discipline your children, and they will give you peace; they will bring you the delights you desire.
Numbers 32:17 Meanwhile our women and children will live in fortified cities, for protection from the inhabitants in the land.
In a recent conversation with a ministry leader in our community, he pointed out how the recent Super Bowl half time show was borderline soft porn. He said that because the Super Bowl is a family event and children of all ages were watching, the entertainment during the half time show should be family appropriate.
This ministry leader said to me, “how we protect children against immorality is an indication of how depraved we have become.”
The essence of that statement has great implications for families in our society. There once was an age of innocence where we were concerned about what the media presented during certain hours of the broadcast day for television. We even developed a rating system for movies to help audiences know how raw the content of the movie would be prior to attending. We even had a rating of PG13 that indicated no one under 13 should watch that movie. Honestly, I don’t know if anyone pays attention to these ratings anymore, because if they like the theme or the actors in the movie, they will attend.
Yet, the slippery slide of Morality in society affects children today because they are exposed to our culture at a younger and younger age. When children go to day care or to school, they immediately encounter the culture from other children. I remember one of my children coming home from grade school with a swear word. We asked him where he heard the word and he told us he heard it at school. Again, the culture will find a way to influence our children. I have said for years that culture is not your friend. Cultural ideas, its language, and its immoral behavior is not healthy for any human being … especially children who are so impressionable.
The question that needs to be asked: “Does our culture protect or exploit our children?”
Telling a child that they can chose to be either gender is exploitation. It does not protect that child against an internal confusion that may develop. Confusion needs to be addressed with Truth … not a lack of direction or permission to act upon that confusion.
Language among children has become coarser as they mimic the language of the culture around them … including language they hear from their parents. Swearing is a language of anger and violence. When someone uses the f-word they are not using it to tell someone they love them … it’s quite the opposite. Our culture shies away from angry people, yet we use the language of anger and disrespect that are pervasive aspects of our culture. Eventually all this angry language will affect children and we show no signs of protecting them from it.
For older children, education is morphing into what I call propaganda. It has components to it that no longer search for the discovery in learning; we program children to see things through the lens of one dimension. We teach global warming as a fact, human sexuality is fluid, and the global community is our new family. All our previous history is vilified through today’s education and our Country was founded with incorrect motives. We will teach the religions of the world with the idea they either are all right or all wrong. We will teach that socialism is better than greedy capitalism and our kids come away from our educational systems with a worldview that is short sighted, angry, and biased.
Our job as parents, educators, and religious leaders is to protect our children with the Truth. Education should give all the options so that an informed decision can be made from all the data presented. Truth is not found in the talking points; those are designed to grab your attention. It is only as you go beyond these talking points that you will find the reality of ideas and concepts that are being taught.
In a recent question and answer time with 20 students, a reporter asked what the major political issue was in our time and they all said global warming. No one challenges these ideas today because culture tells us that they are Truth.
Here is the Truth about culture … don’t Trust it. There is nothing in our culture that is True; it is a man-made set of Values and Rules that are based upon the common denominator of life without God.
• Culture will not protect your family or your children
• Culture will not provide healthy environments; it will only exploit you
• Culture will not tell the Truth about anything; it will only leave you guessing
• Culture will not teach you about Values of Courage and Honor
• Culture will not bring you to a place of health
Do you think I am too harsh? Well, I get it from the Scriptures:
1 John 2:15 Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you.
