A Whole Lot of Shaking Going On

Hebrews 12:27 This expression, “Yet once more,” denotes the removing of those things which can be shaken, as of created things, so that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.

Haggai 2 21Tell Zerubbabel, the governor of Judah, that I am about to shake the heavens and the earth. 22I will overthrow royal thrones and destroy the power of foreign kingdoms. I will overturn their chariots and riders. The horses will fall, and their riders will kill each other. 23But when this happens, says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, I will honor you, Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, my servant. I will make you like a signet ring on my finger, says the LORD, for I have chosen you. I, the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, have spoken!

In all the turbulence of recent days, I was reminded of the Verses of the Bible where God says He was going to shake the earth. His reason? To test the workmanship of our lives, and to test the Foundations upon which our Nation is built.

In my life, I have three lenses through which I look at life:

1. My values

2. My education

3. My experiences

All three of these will be shaken to see what is real and what is not. So, what is God looking for as a result of the shaking? I think God is trying to make us aware of what is important and what is not.

Shaking my values means what?

What remains standing following the shaking is probably what is Real and True.

Shaking my education means what?

What remains standing following the shaking is probably what is Foundational and True.

Shaking my experiences means what?

What remains standing is the result of separating the emotions and bias from the Real and True.

Purifying my grid will give me a better view of how God wants me to live my life. I think there are three other results that happen from the shaking, and the common denominator is clarity:

1. My convictions become clearer. Convictions are those things you will die for, the unmovable beliefs that will not be changed because of time or season.

2. The clarification between wisdom and knowledge. Knowledge knows, wisdom does.

3. The clarity of eternity becomes obvious.

There was a study a few years ago that asked 95-year-old people what they would do differently in living out their lives and consistently it came down to these three:

1. Reflect more

2. Risk more

3. Do more that will last longer, like investing into others

I realized from my own experience that the most dangerous people are people who are complacent. Complacent people are dangerous in society because they don’t vote and don’t care, and they go along to get along. Complacent people do not get ahead of issues … they always operate from behind.

Ecclesiastes 8:11 When the sentence for a crime is not quickly carried out, people's hearts are filled with schemes to do wrong.

Complacent people in the Church are dangerous because:

1. They know just enough to get by

2. They have enough to survive

3. They do enough to be accepted

Is having just enough okay? Are we okay with just getting by? Are my convictions just okay to get by? Are my Beliefs just okay but do not really drive how I live? Am I always playing it safe to the point I don’t influence anyone? Am I a person who is full of knowledge, opinions, and experiences, but I have no wisdom to filter any of it? Shaking is designed to test all of this, and the design of shaking/testing is to convict us of two things:

Who do I serve?

Revelation 2 4Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first. 5Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place.

What is my purpose?

Revelation 3 15I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.

Complacency begins when there is no distinction in your life to drive and lead you. If you are driven and led by this world, you will end up without God. That is a historical truth of Israel’s history. The Good News is that God will not leave us; the bad news is … we do leave Him.

Shaking brings into focus the reality of the Truth of God’s Promises to us. There is never a time when God doesn’t pursue us, and the shaking is to help us realize that He is the Only One who never leaves us or abandons us. When all the dust settles from the shaking, there He stands; immoveable, faithful, and clearly the reason we can rejoice.

Complacency with God is a dangerous place to be because it shortchanges who He wants to be in our lives.
